Understanding the Updated Footwear Safety Standards

This update encompasses more precise testing methods for specific work boot types, rigorous testing of all new materials, improved slip and water resistance, and updated penetration and ladder grip tests.

With these updates, our safety boots provide enhanced ankle protection, improved ladder grip, and superior slip resistance. The puncture resistance now includes two test types for Non-Metal Anti-Penetration Inserts (NMAPI), providing even better protection. Furthermore, our site boots have passed the new scuff cap abrasion resistance test, ensuring ultimate toe cap protection.

• Ankle Protection: The new testing requirements consider the changing area of impact based on boot size, improving accuracy.
• Ladder Grip: To meet the ISO 20345:2021 standard, shoes now have to match the same standard as firefighters.
• Slip Resistance: Testing is now conducted on ceramic tile surfaces instead of steel. The heel and forepart are tested instead of the flat part of the shoe.
• Puncture Resistance: Non-metal anti-penetration Inserts (NMAPI) now have two test types, one with a 4.5mm nail and the other with a 3mm nail.
• Scuff Cap Abrasion Resistance: This new addition tests scuff cap durability over 1,000 abrasion cycles, ensuring ultimate toe cap protection.
• Water Resistance: The water-resistant uppers (WRU) have been replaced with water penetration and absorption (WPA), including new footwear positioning and paper utilisation.
